Yay! they survived the deep freeze!!
As a matter of fact, this newbie's little guys seem to be very happy on the porch. Both are budding, which I could show you if I had a decent camera....
I'm not so sure about the 2 lover branches on the juniper. I may take them off but if not, they *really* need to be wired straight, they're growing upward. I'm afraid that if I don't take them off soon enough, they'll become too thick to cut down the road. Any thoughts? |

if i knew then wot i know now
i once thought the same now ive regretted cutting lower branches on many trees for 2 important reasons. 1 a lower branch can become a sacrifice to fatten the base of a tree or/and 2 it can be the new leader so to trunk chop and create good taper. the question is do you still want to develop this tree or are you ready to style. either one have fun!

As for the third photo, it looks as though the tree would make a good semi or full cascade; from the pic it looks as though those 2 lower branches don't have much potential, and as they are lower down on the tree will not be very vigorous anway unless the top is pruned hard. But you could keep them now and make jins in the future, which is pretty common practice on these sorts of trees. How big is this juni?

Good point. I'm sure it could use some more development. I'd really like to work on the trunk first, I think. Quote:
I'm not sure how you mesure it, but it's only 6" high from top of the pot. The pot itself is maybe 3 or 4 inches ( 10 cm tops) deep. I was thinking a semi cascade too. I haven't done much in the way of pruning other than to thin the interior a little because it needed to be repotted when I purchased it and a couple weeks later was thrust out onto my cold porch. |

semi cascade you say or informal upright both good idea's . either way i would like to see the trunk taken back to its two bestest buds then the 2 low branches will get into go mode and still leave you with options . now only one thing left to do, as soon as you smell spring chop it !
