Yaupon Holly
I bought this holly (Ilex vomitoria) last month. It has a nice three inch trunk. I've never worked with a holly before, so I'm hoping that it will bud back nicely. I planted it in the ground. I plan to airlayer the long upper section.
Any advice would be appreciated.

If it was mine ... famous last words, right? I agree that the upper trunk of this tree has no future at all - it's far too straight and has no brnaches to hid that fact. Additionally there's not even any taper to the trunk. It has to go. If it was mine I would chop OFF the top two thirds and leave only the bottom left branch. I'll post photos of a tree I did the same thing to on Monday and you'll see what I mean. It's dramatic...

So, here are the photos of what I did last Monday (day off work, right, something's got to give...)
This is a Chinese Elm I've had for a few years which I felt was never going to be anything special. I saw there was a smaller tree "inside" which was more attractive so I gave it "THE BIG CHOP". You can see what I did in the photos attached. Anyway - I would do almost exactly the same to your tree - except yours will look even nicer...it has nicer Nebari than mine. Jerry

Ilex vomitoria "Stokes"
Berry:
Well how about something like this pic. The Yaupon Holly will bud back from woody branches and also from the trunk. It got its name when the Indians used the leaves for tea and if the leaves were not dried out correctly before it was boiled it would make you blow chunks, blow your cookies, puke, blow your beets or down right throw up. The vomit tree lol. When I read this I ROFLMAO. My Avatar is a 35 year old Yaupon Holly (Ilex Vomitoria "Stokes"). When I dug this out from a landscaped garden 5 years ago I chopped off all the very long growing branches (there was nothing left but a "log"). It popped out all over and after a year I had several new branches to pick from. It called out to me "Wind swept". The base is a little over 8" and the pot is 10" x 14" x 3.5" interior measurements. hAPPY vomitorian, redhawk

I was thinking along the lines of what redhawk was saying.. but i was wondering how easy it is for you to move / bend the branches... cause if you can, would it be possible to cut off the one long branch so you have what redhawk is suggesting in picture 57125, and then sort of straighten the tree up a bit by moving the branch on the right that's left up.... does that make sense? i don't know if that would work, but it's a thought - maybe more like this..

I saw you had made a virt and thought I'd just "have a go". I then stumbled on the new (and therefore still free) online Adobe Photoshop express. You can upload photos and have access to some fairly sophisticated photoshop software in a browser... https://www.photoshop.com/express/index.html

Yaupons are very hard wood and difficult to bend without cracking/breaking maybe....then grow, grow, grow
