Yard Pine- Did I make it worse?
Hi, trying to stimulate conversation. A friend of mine has a Bonsai nursery over by Oklahoma City. I was over at his place in December picking up tools for a big dig we were getting ready to do in Georgia (we dug over (sort of we had a spade) 100 big tridents, another story). I was walking through his polyhouses and after seeing all of the marvelous material he had, resting for spring, noticed (again) a group of tallish pines (Black Pines) that were nicely barked, but..... I made a bet with him that I could turn the "yardliest" of the bunch into a bonsai (?) tree. He took the bait, a little cash exchanged hands and here is the result (initial). Other than the helicopter effect with the Jin on the left side (I could take all of the branches off... could I?) any ideas? The tree is about 38" tall, the base is a little over 6". The picture is from the styling in early January, the buds have popped and the candles are extending nicely- it will rest until next spring. John

Hi,
I dont' think you made the tree worse at all.If the Bunjin type is what you are going for then I think it looks like a good first styling.I personally like the tree. The before pic really just showed a slanted trunk with a big lump of needles. The trunk seems to have strong character, I think it adds a rugged interest to the line and bunjin suits the tree well for my taste.I like Bunjin aswell as seeing the torture effects, also agree that a drum pot is a wise choice for the design.

Great improvement. I liked the deadwood detail on the root flare immensely.

Actually, it was my dig. Here are a couple of shots of trees prior to sprouting (there we 106 in the trailer). John

Yes they are tridents- @20 yrs old +/-. We are actually working a whole story for the dig- was an "industrial" operation- it was made even better because I had torn a portion of my right rotator cuff complex abut 6 weeks before. If it wasn't for a couple of strong backs (like OKbonsai's?) and my wife as the chief root washer, it never would have happened. Will get together soon.
