No joke. Age doesn't impress me so much as the appearance of age. I would agree with you that i don't think that the original tree comes across well in 2D.

Regards,

Matt

"Age doesn't impress me so much as the appearance of age."

I think I read that on page 25 in book number 12.....

but, nevertheless, you don't cut it off and throw it away for nothing!
Did the "After" virtual give it that?

"I would agree with you that i don't think that the original tree comes across well in 2D."

I didn't say that...
I think it looks great! You just ( maybe) can't see it?

But, it does illustrate my point to Candy about posting pictures! :>)

Funny how different people can see different things in the same tree.

I also much prefer Matt's virtual to its current form. To my eye, the after virtual does give it an impression of age - it looks like one of the twisted old mountain trees that Walter posts from his walks in the alps. The before, while beautiful, just doesn't have that age and solidity to it. Maybe it's partly a matter of what the tree is trying to say. Matt has it saying one thing, you have it saying another.

With my best regards,
Carl

Candy,
Since I am a newbie, having a lot to learn from this forum, can you tell me, or show me with a virtual, what style do you propose for your larch because I have no idea how I would personnally go about it if it was mine. Thank you, Alain

Aldevaux,

It would almost certainly be styled as a Formal upright, if that helps.

Regards,

Matt

Alain -
As Matt suggested, this is going to be a formal upright.

Why formal upright? The tree already has a strong straight tapering trunk line and evenly spaced strong nebari (roots). It screams formal upright style.

I am not a virtual artist but Matt's link will get you to many formal upright styles.

How to achieve formal upright with this larch? The basics are already there and the hard part has already been done by nature - (trunks, roots, branches) and the next steps are
1 - keep the tree healthy (fertilize thru the summer - winter protect thru the winter)
2. In the early spring,(if it is healthy) initial styling - wire out the branches - promote ramification
3. Keep the tree healthy (check wire)
4. For next few years, work on branch development and ramification
5. Keep the tree healthy
6. Year four or five - pot into a suitable pot.

That's the plan in a nutshell.

-Candy

Dale, I thought I would clarify why I feel Matts virtual is an improvement on what is all ready a nice looking tree:

For me (this just my opinion) I currently like the appearance of the tree, however I find slight conflict in the over hanging trunk against the pot as the pot isn't long enough, this causes a certain amount of confusion in my eye, the two seperate areas almost could appear as seperate trees. When Matt did his virtual, he solved this problem that I see and at the same time made the tree more powerful by making it compact.

The two statements you made regarding 35 years of growth and throwing it away for nothing, for me are really not significant, I think an improvement is an improvement, when my teacher says I should cut of a huge branch or trunk I used to think "but I could do this and that with it and what about all this growth on it", but now I realise that I'm the student I should listen and take advice and do it. (Please don't get me wrong i'm not saying that you are a student or lessons are being taught - far from it but critical evaluation is what this forum is all about).

Jonny.

Again please do not take my comments out of context, I like the tree as is but if it were mine would seriously consider Matts virtual.

Matt and Candy,
Thank you very much for the information. Because larch is a very common species in my area and you can find trees of all different sizes, I will go next spring on a collecting trip to try and find a tree that may look somewhat like the one you showed.
To style a formal upright on your tree, I imagine it should take between 10-20 years before you get the lower branches to develop thick enough unless they grow very fast in larch.

Okay I live in Southern California and I dont think that I've ever even seen a Larch. I'm not crazy about the virtual with the foliage reduced to the little triangle over the pot. What I do agree with is that the caopy of the tree has become too large. Tighten it up and give it a form. Someone with experience, tell me if I am not too far off so I can see what I'm learning.
