Candy,
That is a nice specimen to start with. It'll be a fine tree!
Larch are one of my favorites and I have quite a few. Two taller literati/bunjin were started with stock very similar to this.
BTW, here is one I entered in Certre pot/tree contest this year ( A better larger pic on BCI website in contests section).
I was always worried about this tree and keeping watered in the hot summer here so I designed and made this oval pot SPECIFICALLY for this tree and colored clay treatments really bring out the bark and rootage texture and colors into one nice flow....
In MY opinion....

But, I heard "needs another pot" and "pot to big" critiques!

Can't win!.....

I shoulda just let it look good in a pot too shallow to keep it healthy!

Dale

Dale -
Your tree/pot composition looks good. I particularly like the color combinations. You definately made the right choice in making the health of the tree your priority. Tis better to slightly overpot than to have a dead tree in the perfect sized pot.

This is going to look like a tall alpine region grown tree. Very nice.

Candy,

I too am a fan of N. Lenz. I have his book "Bonsai from The Wild" and has helped alot with my collecting of larches here. Colin Lewis is another that I find is great with Larch.

I agree that this will be look great on its own merit. I have about 30 collected larches. Most are back in the ground for the health of it, and about a dozen in training. I have one grouping in a Sara Rayner pot.

I find that when I look on these threads, anything posted "larch" is the first thing I go to.....I am a huge fan.

Good luck and thanks for posting this!

Paul

Candy,

Very nice tree! I too am partial to Larch and would like to master the skill needed to design one for my collection! I have a small potensia in a grow bed now, nowhere as beautiful as this tree! I'd feel just like you and as that kid, I'd shout bring it on! I'm ready for the sweet stuff! I will watch with great interest! Thanks for this thread!

Nothing wrong with that pot, but I'd do something like this...

You guys gotta be kidding!!!! Jeez, I hope that was a joke!
You just cut off 35 years of tree that looks great!, left a big untapered "stub" and a small vert. top that doesn't match the trunk.

I guess this is still one of the problems with posting 2D images on a forum. You'd have to hold a gun to my head to do that!
