Yamadori Larch
Here is something that you don't find very often:
(1) beautiful taper from bottom to top (2) strong rootage (3) good branch selection all on a four-and-a-half foot collected larch! It is easy to see a future for this one and in five years, you just know this is going to be a nice specimen tree. This is my new toy. (Time to start scoping out a future pot.) |

Great find.
The only thing it lack, is lower branching.

Camay -
Maybe it isn't quite apparent in the photo but there are a few nice branches at least half way down the trunk. I don't see this tree lacking with branches. I guess you just have to see it in person to see the potential. - (or wait five years for the final product .) |

Candy,
Nice tree. Are you still collecting these this time of year? I have very good luck in late winter to late spring. about 40% during the fall collection (survival). But never have collected during summers..... just wondering. A friend of mine has a similar collected larch. He is concidering a future of tucking another smaller tree into the base of the taller one. He will cut a wedge into the area near the base, and fit the smaller tree up against the base. This will "fill" the space needed from the side that is empty. A thought. Paul

I agree, that will make a fine bonsai. Good luck with it.

Hi Candy
You have a great looking tree there. I suppose I am a bit biased as I do like Larches, I have got one in my gallery. Especially when those "little green shaving brushes" emerge in Spring. I think that by wiring all the branches down and even keeping and jinning the dead ones, wil make this tree a statley specimen. Good luck with the styling Andy "May your trees go from strength to strength" |

Paul- No this was not "just collected." It was collected in the bogs of Maine in the spring by a forester friend of mine. As you rightly suspect, it would probably not be a very good idea to collect this larch at this time of year. Quote:
Thanks for the thought but I believe that this tree can stand on its own. I have spent many hours in the galleries of Nick Lenz - he has been called "The King of Larch" - with some of the finest bonsai larch specimens, so I have a fair amount of inspiration to carry to this tree. Quote:
Andy - That's a wonderful larch in your gallery. I love larch also and especially like watching them change through the seasons. I actually have several collected trees. Some, you may remember from this thread. Quote:
At this point, that is exactly my plan. Quote:
That's it! It does feel like Christmas and I am a kid with a new toy. All this new found enthusiasum could not be contained - so I spilled a little here on the forum -Candy Last edited by Candy J. Shirey : 25-Jul-2004 at 08:35 AM. |

Thanks for sharing your tree and your enthusiasm! Both are very encouraging to new guys (of which I am one). My project this weekend has been building a six foot long, three foot wide two tiered bonsai display/work table that will hold the few beginning trees I have as well as expanding as I develop more skill.
I don't have much of an eye yet for what is good and what is bad according to the way things are supposed to be done, but my comment is that I think that is one very cool and THICK tree. Thanks again for sharing. Best of luck! |

Candy,
Now that's inspiring, that trunk is amazing. Almost looks like it was painted straight. My golden has a long way to go compared to this!!! Nice find. Scott |
