Wuggums-En Willow Project

I love willows, and there are lots in my area for inspiration and material. Chief root inspector Desdemona suggested I obtain a branch to start with, since they root so easily.

My girlfriend, whose hand you see in the picture (ain't she cute) giggled when I came home in suit & tie covered with dirt and bark from climbing the tree near my office to get a suitable branch.

Here's where we started in April of 2004.

Since I know they bud back like nuts even late in the year, I decided to do the trunk chop now to set buds in the right place for spring profusion.

It's OK, Dez said so

And here's a quick sketch my cat prepared to show what we hope to do with this tree in the next 8 to ten years, depending on how fast wounds heal and new leaders thicken.

Input and insults welcomed!

Pootsie,

I will be thoroughly interested to follow the progress of your willow over time. In nature, weeping willows are by far the tree I love most. They are incredibly graceful.

That being said, it is my understanding that they are difficult as bonsai. I would like to try one in the future, but I still have much in the way of basics to learn before I attempt any such feat.

I will look forward to updates!

Jennifer

craig coussins has a willow he rooted in a bucket of water that is about the size of a 2 liter coke bottle, its in his book totally bonsai!

By the way, anyone ever heard that the water that willow cuttings are rootted has some magic ability to help with rooting in other cuttings?

Here is another magic ability: drinking that water can prevent heart-attack.

(aspirin is an extract from the willow)
