Wuggums-En Sugar Maple project -- Old Joe
Elmo asked me to share the tale of my sugar maple, lovingly named Old Joe.
I first spotted old joe in the tree stand beside the condo I used to live in, around 1998 shortly after I got into bonsai. Having read some stuff about collecting, I decided to dig slowly. I cut around him in the spring and lifter him in the fall of 1999. Here he is right after being dug up and then potted. pootsie |

Here he is in the spring of 2002, after I had spent the intervening years slowly reducing the roots and removing old soil. (the plastic cups were for layering)
As you can see, the roots had come along nicely. pootsie |

Unfortunately, while trying to saw the root-pad flat, I broke off a huge chunk and took much of the root with me.
Chief Root Inspector Desdemona was very upset with her apprentice. pootsie |

Through her fine mentoring, Dez helped me nurse Old Joe back to health.
Here he is in the fall of 2003. You can see by the fall foliage and the interest of the hollow trunk why I wanted this, even if some say sugar maples aren't cut out for bonsai. pootsie |

Wonderfu trunk, and what beautiful fall color! Bravo! This will be an unusual and worthwhile tree someday very soon.

Thanks Pootsie that was great. Keep us posted. About how old do you think that tree is? The trunk has definite character. Do you plan to make it into a cascade or a slating style {or any other}. Well that is inspirational
! Thanks agian. Elmo |

Its always nice reading threads where a you can see the development of a tree. Thats a great looking trunk you have their Poots, and its come a long way since you collected it! In a few years time, that will be a real beaut.
All the best, Aaron |
