As a matter of fact, Andrew, I do find a lot of interest in that. More to ponder ...

However with the current planting angle the largest root grows almost sideways, not forcefully downwards, with no obvious reason and the roots that hit ground first are rather thin and insignificant. the virtual planting angle corrects this and starts a nice movement from the roots that continues up through the tree.

I look forward to your thoughts, andrew
Andrew:

I just happened to run across this picture and it reminded me of our discussion.

The old stump was removed above the graft, and the long growth reduced to begin working on the final leader and new branching.

Then the chop was reduced with a sharp knife in hopes of healing over the massive wound. That will take a few years with Ohio's conditions.

Finally, we are trying an approach graft to put a branch down low. The branch that you see curving around funny in the earlier pix had been wired down for a couple months to reduce it's tendancy to try to spring away from the graft.

Wish us luck!

The hot weather fried the approach graft. We are now working on a thread instead. Wish us luck
