Ah, Fly, the good old days! Yes, it's nice to look back at development, both the tree's and my own! And Tom Waits, you can never lose points quoting him to me.
Andrew: Thank you for the virt. It looks like you put a lot of time into it. I hadn't condsiderend moving the rock, but turning it like that seems rather unstable. However, I like the branch arrangement a lot. I may do something similar. Please keep 'em coming gang ![]() pootsie |

Hi Pootsie,Here are some thoughts to go with my virtual of my tree. I altered the planting angle to get around a few "holes in the story".Of course this is my story so please feel free to take or leave whatever you want.
ROCK; Firstly the problem with most root over stone bonsai including my own is the use of rocks without a definable shape...they are pretty much "rock shaped" by altering the emergance angle of the stone I think you can create something more dynamic with more movement. From a visual point of view, I see my virtual as being balanced as a whole and from a narrative point of view I see a rock like this being like an iceberg in that only the tip of something much greater emerges from the ground so in my mind at least I,m not bothered by instability. ROOTS; The story I see for the ficus is of a seedling in the tropics that has sprouted in a rock crevice, finding safety from browsing animals to grow into a tree. It has thrown down aerial roots to seek nourishment and when found they have fattened and became extensions of the trunk. However with the current planting angle the largest root grows almost sideways, not forcefully downwards, with no obvious reason and the roots that hit ground first are rather thin and insignificant. the virtual planting angle corrects this and starts a nice movement from the roots that continues up through the tree. TREE; At the current angle the tree grows sideways from the rock but rapidly changes direction to grow upright. I think this would work if the tree was planted lower on the rock as if it was forced to grow towards the light but in a tropical envirenment with the sun directly overhead for nearly all year and being planted at the top I see this as another "hole" in the story, at the virtual angle this change of angle becomes a sort of "moyogi wiggle" that I think looks in keeping with this style. One last thought though, In a tropical environment how long would a small part of a rock remain bare and exposed and without total coverage in vegetation?I look forward to your thoughts, andrew |

An invitation to manipulate
To one and all -- now's a great opportunity to practic your virtual skills! Or print it out and sketch!
Here is a blank of just the rock, roots, trunk and soil. Please, let me know what you see in your heart. Manipulate digitally, manually, creatively, and with abandon! ![]() pootsie |

Passing time during a boring deposition
Of course, I think the sketch shows ramification beyond what may be acheived at this scale, but we're just tossing ideas around, right?
Any thoughts? pootsie |
