Ah, memories ...

This is my FIRST 'bonsai' ever. I had a couple of twiggy little ficus too little plants languishing as houseplants when, around 1997, I decided I was going to see what bonsai is all about.

Sorry for the poor quality pix of the tree, Alice, around Feb. 98

Later on, after I had killed a tree that I tried to root over coral overnight (hmmm why did it die?) I decided that Alice should be grown over the coral.

Here she is in 99 and up through winter of 01. Sorry, no good pix of the actual roots or the coral at that time.

Why yes, Brian, I'm getting to that

Dez stepped in and started to teach me a thing or two. Here she is looking after the tree in October 02, and repotting in December 02

By this time Dez had managed to teach me something about bonsai. I got bold in May 04, and started hacking back. And you may ask yourself ...

I had planned on doing a two-tree composition, but tree #2 died shortly after this picture in July 04

In August of this year, I got really bold in deciding to develop the trunk.

Too bold, and I could not get a leaf to bud back until panic struck in Late October and I performed a graft, hoping that the tree's reserves held. Thank goodness, It worked!! Thank you again, Jerry!

Here is Alice as of yesterday, back from the brink of death. I have a good start on roots clasping the rock, and I'm back to ZERO on trunk development.

Input and insults heartily welcomed.

What a great thread Poots.
Thanks for sharing the life of this tree with us.
I always like seeing timelines of a tree in development.
