When I fused a ficus it happened quite by accident. I was talking thin pieces and twisting them together to look like a braided tree. I used large baggie ties to hold them together every 3 inches or so. The baggie ties worked well because it took awhile to fuse and I was able to apply new ties and then remove the old ones. The ficus grew so quickly that the wire would cut into the bark if i didn't keep changing it. I guess the ties would also allow easier access to remove any dead areas. Just a suggestion. Good Luck. I started a similar project last June- http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthread.php?t=7047. I had one cutting die back on it. I removed this cutting and binded them a little closer together. I have not seen much progress regarding fusing on the trees, so I will probably move them into the ground this spring to help speed up the process.
