Work on a shimpaku

Here is a series of pictures showing the work that I have done on this shimpaku. This work was done about four weeks ago just befor I got my digi camera. Today I am just catching up on pictures. The first picture is of the whole tree.

The first problem was on the number one branch. The heavy portion of this branch is already too long, and the branches that come off of it are about 5in with no foliage, so what to do?

I wrapped and wired both branches and twisted the longest one all the way around to the back of the tree to make a foliage pad behind the tree. The second shorter branch was bent radically down, then up, and then down again to shorten it up by over 2 inches.

This last photo shows the movement in the top of the tree. This is a work in progress. I get to try almost any technique that I want on this tree as it is all experimental.

A turnbuckle attached to the jin was used to lower and bend the apex

This last photograph shows a possible front.

I hope that this encourages you all to try wiring techniques.

Looks good my friend. What's that green wrap, and what is it for? can we see the rear?

Dudy: This is green gardeners type that I use to wrap branches or tie things off or wrap wire to protect limbs. It is just a soft pliable plastic tape that I find cheap and convenient. The back of the tree is all foliage pads and hard to see anything else so I probably will not post it.

Ripgreentree,

The possible front you think would make the tree look real nice. With a little work on the branch and foliage pads, you will have a real fine tree.

Adam: Thankyou for your kind words, There is lots of work to be done on this tree. It is good practise for wireing and carving. There are two eye poker branches that have to be dealt with. Both of them are already gined but will need to be further reduced. Over all wheather this tree ever becomes good bonsai or not seems moot at this point because it is such a good tree to practise on. As you requested here is the back of this tree. The trees dimentions are 18in. tall 13in. wide with a 2in. trunk
