Winter pruning, drastic makeover of Serissa

This serissa of mine was looking worse for wear, and I thought, whast the hell, do some pruning on it. At least now i can see the head, I just hope it will back bud, but then if it doesnt it didnt cost me a lot of money and i will have learned something.

Larry:

I'll let someone else comment on your styling decisions. But for those who are relatively new to bonsai, I want to emphasize that hard-pruning a stressed tree is a very bad idea.

You think it could have got any worse Crow?

Regards,

Fish.

Larry--

Why post it then? You obviously wanted to either get posts like this one or praise for killing bonsai. Either way, I don't get it.

Seriously, I saw this tree declining, obviously I'm not providing the right environment for it, and thought rather than just let it die back further I'd trim away all the old dead wood, as well as some of the live, to allow me to see the centre, and also to see if it Serissa will regenerate from pruning(I did ask this but no-one answered), and just how tough/weak it is.
You dont learn unless you experiment, altho I'd rather not have to , but this tree was a £5 job in too small a pot, what you might call a mallsai without the glued on rocks!

Good suggestion Will. You always seem to come up with useful stuff. I am in awe of your superior knowledge on the subject matter at hand.

Thank you Ron, I'm glad you caught the blatant sarcasm that suggested that since Larry heavily pruned a plant that was in failing health that he might as well have over fertilized it as well. This is a huge improvement on your part Ron, congratulations on catching the obvious.

It was in part answering the question posed by Fish...."You think it could have got any worse Crow?" Taken into it's proper context it was in fact relevant to the discussion at hand, unlike your post which added nothing and had no purpose other than attempting to cause another thread to go sideways.

Quite Right.

I would not have done what you did, but I say this in hindsight after doing pretty much the same as you did and having the tree die.

Keep plugging away.

Regards,

Chris.
