Pretty darn close to what I was thinking, Earl! I like it.

I just riffed on that theme a bit more; here's what I came up with. I dropped that rightmost branch down and added some movement; that'll be pretty easy to do with wire alone. Getting the kink into that upper branch is going to be a bigger challenge - but perhaps not prohibitive, given that you've got three dimensions to work with, not just the two that we've got in the flat plane of the photograph.

Re: Windswept Shimpaku Juniper

Oh - I'd probably work on getting rid of those two large roots coming out above the soil level, as well. I forgot to do that in the virtual. I wouldn't try to do it quickly, though. I'd make sure there was a really solid healthy rootmass lower down, and then take them off one at a time over a couple of years.

Cheers,
Old Mister

Re: Windswept Shimpaku Juniper

Having looked at all of the virtuals once more, I have to add another disclaimer to mine. The vertical alignment of the right edge of those three foliage-bearing branches is terrible. The lowest should be extended further, probably, and the upper trimmed back.

My favorite of the whole bunch is probably Jules' first virtual. The shift in planting angle is really nice. I worried about making the jin vertical by doing so, but that's a small price to pay for what is gained.

Re: Windswept Shimpaku Juniper

I just see lots of movement in that great trunk. The perfect "s" curve. I would concentrate on accentuateing the trunk by removing all the things that take your eye away. The two small branches on the right do not lend themselves to the design. The jin is too far removed to be of any help, although it could stay for a while to see what it looks like with it. This is what I see in about two years. AK

The pot may be a little too big. I should have shrunk it down a tad!

We've got a new winner! I really like Al's virtual!!!

(And it lets you avoid going in the windswept direction, which I consider a good thing because it is an extremely difficult style to execute well.)

Adam, no matter which way you go, you obviously have a winner. There are so many trees that there is bascially only one way to go but look at all the options on this one. Your trees has generated more virtuals than any tree on BonsaiTalk for quite awhile. What a compliment to you and your tree.

Re: Windswept Shimpaku Juniper

Adam -

I absolutely LOVE it!

(Perhaps because it looks a lot like my virtual.
)

Only one minor suggestion - try to get a little bit of movement into that lowest branch, rather than having it as a straight line.

But it's really a great tree, and I know I'd be super-proud to have it on my bench.

Now just keep pinching and developing those folliage pads...

All the best,
Old Mister

Re: Windswept Shimpaku Juniper

Great job! I'll trade you my windswept in the Spring Show for yours. Yours is much more compact...the way I hope mine will get in a few years as I "chase" back the growth as it back buds.

Keep up the work.
