Windswept Shimpaku Juniper

Here's a shimpaku juniper I bought at a bonsai show. Once it feels in with foliage I will update the picture. Comments and suggestions welcomed.

Adam

Re: Windswept Shimpaku Juniper

That's a nice tree. I made a virt, too.
Please use a cardboard or something as the background when you take pics! It's pure pain to patch a panel (or tile) wall.

I cut the two small branches and the price tag's string .
Then I tilted the remaining branch 30[sup]o[/sup] to the right and produced some foliage. After that I spent 20 min patching the wall...

Wait, wait... I see a smaller pot in the future.

Rgds,
Zeb

Re: Windswept Shimpaku Juniper

Wonderful tree - and excellent virtuals.

If you want to make it a windswept (and I think that's really the only sensible option without major major work) I think you need to be careful to keep the shape and placement of foliage pads consistant with the "wind." Similarly, you want to keep the movement of the major branches consistant with this basic idea.

The powerful upper branch - the one that Zeb chose to keep in his virtual - poses a little bit of a challenge here, growing toward the wind slightly before moving strongly upward. I'd prefer to see a much sharper bend there with a complete reversal of direction, or some sort of rotation to eliminate this problem. I'll ponder it a bit, and post a virtual if any good solutions come to me.

Even as is, though, it's a very minor issue. Wonderful tree!

Re: Windswept Shimpaku Juniper

This may be sort of what Oldmistercrow is talking about. If not, it is still my idea and somewhat different than the others. This is a windswept and it's well on its way! Once it fills out more, I would concentrate on make sure the branches all look windswept. I would also get a bend down and out in the lower branch and bring the second branch (from bottom) down some but I don't know how to do that in a virtual. I think I see a branch that now goes up to form the crown...that little greenery in there is my attempt to bend that down and somehow to the left. You don't want a crown in a windswept..the wind blows it all to the left. Anyway, take it for what it's worth...
