Windswept benjamina

I have been trying to make a somewhat credible tropical windswept....this one is in the early stages...It is 12 inches in height from the soil line. Just wanted to share its progress so far.

Tom S.

I love the great looking natural taper of the trunk, great potential! I'm guessing this is it's first bonsai pot. I like where you are going with the shape, I think that a tropical windswept might not have all the foliage directed in 1 direction like the evergreens but only have the majority of it in one direction and the trunk and main branches give you that windswept feeling. Therefore I say, so far so good!

Thumbs up

I like this one Tom!
Good radial root spread, great trunk taper, and a great use of negative space. Very dynamic movement. I would like to see this one again when it has some more refinement to it.

Thanks for the kind words, Bob...I appreciate your input...this has always been a tough design for me to get a handle on...this tree seemed to lend itself in that direction. I will keep you posted.

Best...Tom

i would like to see this tree sit deeper into the pot, but that can come with some time. the tree looks great, as if it were exposed to a constant breeze. excellent depiction of windswept, one of the hardest forms to present convincingly, but i think you've done it well.

Tom-

Nice tree. I like the basic initial styling, and think it will be great when it fills in. However, I don't think ficus really lend themselves to windswept designs, and what you have here isn't what I personally think of when I imagine windswept. So, I would not call this "windswept" but instead "seeker of light". That will allow a full crown, growth in a general direction, use of negative space, etc. Again, nice tree!

rich, i don't want to sound argumentative, but this tree looks to me like a great depiction of a "passive" windswept tree. i think what you are thinking is of a more drastic design, something that was exposed to a more harsh environment. there are many interpretations of each style. when this trees canopy fills i think it will look even better. while ficus may not generally be used for this style, rules are meant to be followed, but sometimes, great things come when they are broken.

Tom,

Nice tree.I like the trunk taper and movement very much. There's a little confusion at the apex, but, that can be dealt with. The shape is very nice...and certainly inspires a wind influenced image.I don't do much with benjaminas so i'm not real sure how much more ramification you will be able to achieve.I'm not real sure it(more ramificatin) would be necessary for this tree to be a success....but it would add to the image i think.

again..very nicely done and unusual.Keep up the good work.
