Willowleaf Ficus Advancement
Wow look at the before, and after It's amazing what two months outside in indirect (very monitored) sunlight, and lots of love will do for a ficus over the summer. This tree took off like a rocket. The smooth bark developed amazing fishures, and cracks. Back budded all over, and even grew arial roots. It amazed me the change that took place over such a short amount of time. Here's a 06-14-03 before, and 01-31-04 after pic. 10 deg outside here today. Man am I glad we had snow to burry my outside trees in a bit.. Brrrrrrrr. Worst case of cabin fever ever...lol

nice tree David
don't be afraid to defoliate and trim back, hard during the warm months...the branches and trunk will thicken up quickly but if you just let them go you end up with no taper |

ditto on agrahams' reply.. also, David, don't be afraid of total defoliation and putting it in the fullest sun you can find. Those leaves will be easy a third the size. They grow in full sun in tropical environment.

ficus
Hi David,
I live in Downingtown, PA and was dumbfounded to see that you are in the Lancaster area!! This is a great ficus!! I have a question - my varigated ficus is dropping leaves after repotting. Is it dying? What can I do to save it or do I just leave it alone? Tim |

Yep Tim,
Your only 60 miles away. Small world isn't it. As far as your ficus problem goes, did you recently do the repoting? If so I think you have choosen the wrong time to do it. More twords spring might have been a better choice. Also I think your choice in specimens might be a tad bit on the "lanky" side. Hey it's all in what the artist see though. I recomend you give that ficus so shade, and monitor it water very closely. Considering your area, you should have some very very good pre bonsai sources. I highly recommend you go to the next philly flower show. The bonsai displays their will blow your mind. There's also a excellent selection of premee's

Sick ficus
Good morning David,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I did repot it just recently. Too early in the year huh? I'll do as you say and put it in shade. Hopefully, I didn't kill the tree. My smaller ficus dropped there leaves when I repotted them to but bounced back nicely. Tim |

I'd second the advice to go to the Philly flower show. Talk to Chase Rosade and those at his display (You won't be able to buy anything; his display is "non-commercial".)
However, he will have class schedules available, and signing up for some is the best thing I ever did in terms of bonsai. He (and Soli) are a world-class resource, right in your own "backyard". There are vendors as well. They range from great to the sort that will say "yes" if you ask if it wil be okay on top of your tv (even if it is a juniper!). By all means, go and enjoy. ![]() |

Getting bacjk to the ficus. I diagree with any shade for this family of trees. The only way to perk up a ficus is warmth to the roots and tons of sunlight. Anything else will end up in a downward spiral of weakness and death. Good luck!
