The Will To Live

Last November, I was fortunate enough to save some willow branches from the chipper after the municipal workmen started destroying a willow in my road with chainsaws.

I've heard mythical tales about the self-preservation tactics of willows, so, despite it being nearly winter, I shoved these large cuttings into my lawn and left them.

Sure enough, last weekend when I looked, lots of small roots growing. I potted this one up to begin the training.

22 inches high, 3 inch diameter trunk at soil line. Shame a 3 inch pine branch won't root in 4 months over winter!

Fish.

O piscean,

Good job.

Every year for the past 4 years I've told myself I'd do what you have done. Every year procrastination has got the better of me.

I MUST do it this year...

Regards,

TB / Chris

They sure don't need much coaxing to get them to root. You can start cuttings as thick as you thigh if you want to. Good job.

Hello Fish,

I was wondering how you got on with these willows.

Still trying to beat procrastination btw...

Regards,

Chris.

At the start of december i whacked sum rather thick willow branches into the ground, a couple with a good shape and nice taper in them to start with. I guess i'd better check on them soon...

Hi Chris,

The willow pictured is dead. Summer of 2003 was too much for it given my sporadic watering schedule. I have one still alive that stayed in the ground until last spring, but it will never amount to anything more than a curiosity. Same as the dead one really...

Best,

Fish.

What species of willow was it? I remember my brother brought home a large willow 'stick'(crack willow i think) which was about 2 feet long at least and quite thick. He simply plonked it in the soil in his garden and very quickly it became a good size tree.Willows and poplars are amazing(Funny, you hear mention of willow bonsai but not poplar- i guess that willows are more poplar! )
