White Pine In Sara Rayner Pot

Here is my white pine in its new pot. Both pots are from Sara Rayner, but ultimately I chose the rectangle because it compliments the overall design while the round directed the focus on the lower branch a little too much. Either was a vast improvement over the old "Mister T" pot.

The shape is good. It would be nice if the glaze were like the other pot. What are those white rocks for? Personally I think they are a distraction.

Regards,

Matt

TreeBay,

The rocks are (and have always been) there to hide reverse taper at the base. The rock by itself is to carry out the illusion of rocky ground (rocks on both sides of the trunk only is not normally going to happen "conveniently" in nature without others in the area, so there you go. I will be treating the rocks to create a more grayish appearance so they won't be so pronounced. When the reverse taper is gone (which has diminished significantly) I will probably remove the rocks. As far as the glaze, some oil and cleaning will give it a little darker appearance, but I like a subdued glaze with the white pine (after all it is the "Queen" of the pines). Just my opinion.

Are you mad at me for getting rid of the Mister T pot? I think you got some mileage out of that!!!

John

Looks great to me! Maybe the rocks would be less distracting if they were a little darker so they don't jump out so much. Overall, I think it's still an improvement.

Sad to see the Mr. T pot go. He will be missed.

I am sure Mr. T will find his use somewhere! That pot was probably singularly responsible for us going over the bandwidth limit this month (I am just kidding of course).

With regard to the rocks - unfortunately, the rocks won't help develop roots, they will probably do the opposite. In terms of getting new roots developing, you might consider removing the stones, lowering the trunk a bit and letting soil, air, light and help with the development of the roots. Getting the trunk down into the soil, maybe putting a little bit (not a lot) of sphagnum moss on either side and so forth will help develop roots.

Here's the darker glaze and no rocks. This pot looks a touch large but it is 110% better than the one with the ring details that you posted last week. Darker color helps to conceal the size a little, too, but I would probably go somewhat smaller.

Good luck,

Matt

John, love the tree and new pot but like Matt I dislike the rocks. They are a distraction.

i don't know guys, on one hand the tree looks great without the rocks, on the other, if the two rocks around the base of the tree were darker to not distract so much from the tree, IMHO, i think that it would portray a more natural looking environment. just my two cents, still love the tree.
