pdbonsai,
Getting back to the subject of our chat the other night, why was this tree collected? Maybe I'm missing something, but it doesn't seem to have much going for it. -OMC

Hey OMC,
I should have gotten into details I suppose... This is "Urban Yamadori" , he collected this from his yard during a landscaping overhaul, rather than toss it, he potted it up.He also fancies the natural large white pines in our forests here. I believe he is going for that look in this tree. He wanted to see if anyone had other ideas about it. Paul

Ah! That answers that! As for what to do with it? I don't have the foggiest. Between the trunkline problems and the reverse taper, this one is a real problem tree. If it were mine, I'd sneak over the fence and plant it in my neighbor's yard while he was on vacation. Cheers, OMC

I sorta have to agree with Carl on this one. Besides the severe reverse taper you also have the big knots (don't remeber what they are called) where serveral branches have grown out at the same place...on both trunks. Maybe several air layers would make a great forest
![]() It will be interesting to see if some of the experts on line can come up with a creative way to minimize the defects. Earl |

As an amature I would layer the trunk, reducing the height and loose the branch to the left.
Here is a quick virtual.......

Pictures do show a reverse taper. Even in person when you look at it from the front it seems that way as well. If we 1/4 turn it in either direction, it is actually flat, which I find to be a fault as well, but not as bad as a reverse taper. It twists right at that point just above the base causing it to look that way. I also commented to him about the right side branching where three branches come from just about the same point on the trunk.
From his chosen front, it is hidden and you would never be able to tell. A few degrees up down or sideways, it is revealed. There are many faults to the tree, but for what its worth, a workable tree. Literati was one thought. Thanks guys for the comments, keep em coming, learning thru dialog!! Paul

giving it another whack
This thread disappeared from my radar for awhile, and I remembered it after I saw the new post on another cedar. I did not want to give up on doing a virtual for my friend, so I did a bunch, tweaking it a little different in each one.
Granted some think that this may not have potential, I think it has alot. Tho there are some things we need to address, they are minor and can be achieved if the right stuff is done to it. I tried to balance it out as I went along with the virtual, these are basically the steps I took thru my virtual, saving them after I thought they were finished, then added or subtracted. I must tell you, I do not believe that this is even the chosen front. The stick in the soil is the view from the front. If ya can. envision the trunk ONLY, turning to the right, to position the stick in the front. I am sorry that this isnt a chosen front, but I had fun working it. I am looking for some yea's or nays on it. If Nay, what would you do? Paul
