I've got three of them that I think I may be digging out of my new yard.
Do they make "credible" non-rustic bonsai?

I totaly agree with Al's opinion here.

Airlayer that off for a possible shohin and the base. You may end up with two suffcient trees out of one poor one.

I had similar thoughts with the middle stumb, which looked to me as a kind of jin or dead wood. I would carve this more out, maybe in the future. For now I'd wait what comes out of the leaves on the left, to make a new trunk, which could even be formed as a bunjin or moyogi or..... whatever. I made you a paint virtual of my thoughts on this part of the tree. Offcourse a broom style is possible to, maybe i'd even placed the branches too much like a pine. Hope you'll be able to make something out of it. And....keep us posted.

cheers Wessel

Is there a "rule" that says that bunjingi can't be straight?

Yes, I think by definition a bunjin style has a graceful trunk with alot of movement in it. My former teacher's teacher, Mr. Nakamura from Japan, once said that a good bunjin should have over 23 curves or changes in direction in the trunk. I haven't seen that exact number quoted anywhere else, but given that he is usually one of the judges at kokufu, I take what he says as pretty important.
