The unusual thing is that it seems universes better than most of the material posted on the net. Otherwise not much to me really. This is outstanding material, certainly not orthodox, but the result can be an extemely good little bonsai.
The unusual thing could be that it did not cost anything because it was 'waste'.
I would take it any time.

From what I see it could also be a phoenix graft. Then I would not want it.

best regards

Yes, it seems to be a tanuki (phoenix graft).

Regards,

Matt

Yes the tree is in fact a counterfeit bonsai, if you're like me and have no possibility of ever owning a nice driftwood juniper then you will have to resort to fraud, is this still better nothing?
For anyone interested in making their own I found an excellent tutorial here http://www.bonsailearningcenter.com...nuki_bonsai.htm

Treenut, even though its a phoenix graft, i personally don't think there is anything wrong with that as long as you label it as such, and personally i very much like what you have done it works well, the driftwood is very striking. What are your plans for the foliage? or was it just recently done and as yet there are no plans?

Jonny.

Maybe shimpaku foliage would work better for you. I don't recognize this juniper exactly, but it seems coarse for this size planting.

The trunk stock is about as good as you could hope to find for tanuki.

Regards,

Matt

Hi, I grafted this one about twelve months ago, I left as much foliage on as possible to aid fast growth, the only training I did then was to wire the main leader so as to turn and follow the flow of dead windswept branches at the top of the plant,I used some wire to hold it in place and the trunk has now set into posisition well, I would like to thin it some, I think it is far to bushy, but I am still contemplating what to do there (suggestions). I can't recall the name of the juniper that I used, I bought a number of them on special at the garden centre.
I have attempted some more tanukis but not nearly as good as this one.
