It looks like a serissa, correct me if I'm wrong.
You can find some basic information of it here: http://www.shbonsai.com/care_serissa.html http://www.bonsaiweb.com/articles/index.php?38 http://www.brusselsbonsai.com/care/...s/serissa.shtml http://bonsai-bci.com/species/serissa.html Good luck with your tree!

thankyou very much.. any further advice people can give me would be appreciated. It is my first bonsai and i am scared of killing it.. I have a few questions i am not clear on:
1) Is it alright to keep this one indoors all year round? As long as it is near sunlight but also protected from the afternoon sun.. ? 2) To water it, do i fully immerse the pot it is in all the way up to the bottom of the bonsai and then put it on that little drain pot? <-- do i do this each time it gets dry on top? 3) When could i expect this to flower? 4) Is it in good condition right now? (i just got it today, not sure how long or what care it got in the shop) thanks

You should keep the serissa outside in summer when the temps are over 18 celcius, if it gets colder than that you should take the serissa indoors. It will do much better outside than inside. You can give it some extra light if you have dark winters, and keep the tree indoors. Indoors you should keep it out of draughts, and protect it from too much burning sun from the window and give it some humidity. I think that you don't need to immerse it every time you water. You could immerse it once a week or so to ensure that the whole rootball gets moist. Regulary you should water it from above, or let it stand in the rain. You should only water it when the soil starts to get dry. You can check it by scraping of some soil from the surface with your finger and see if the soil is getting dry.
The tree seems to be in allright condition. Just don't prune it now because it will need to adapt to the new enviroinment.

thanks Tiny.. it looks like it will have to be an indoor tree. As the temperatures here in scotland are very rarely OVER 18degC!!!! It is always cold here..
So in the window, away from draughts it is.. I have this garden hose that i can set on spray, when it needs watering could i take the bonsai outside and use that over it? (so the leaves and soil gets water)

Yes, you can water it outside with the hose gently if it is not too cold outside. Othervise you can use a watering can inside... YOu could place some humidity trays near your bonsai aswell and mist your tree with water daily.

Hi cinder, yes Tiny is right it is Serrissa foetida from the looks and sounds of things, often known as snow rose or tree of a thousand stars because of its flowers (which is nice).
Jonny. Note: I have heard that a lot of people find them difficult and tempremental to look after (i have never tried them myself). Hopefully you will be ok (don't mean to put you off!). |
