What do you think of this Chinese Banyan?
This is a new tree. I purchased it from a local bonsai nursery. It is about 18 inches. This picture is not very good. Interesting large aerial root and good nebari (at least I think so). I have removed some of the dirt from the top of the roots to expose more than you see here. I have not trimmed or touched the top of the tree. I have had it for about 3 weeks now and it is doing very well. I just need some ideas on how it should be styled and what it should look like when trained more. What do you think?

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME

Re: What do you think of this Chinese Banyan?
Nice Tree. I think it is a Ficus, probable a benj. I would do nothing for a month or two anyway. You want the tree to get used to its new home. Let it adapt to the location you have given it. It will probable loss a few leaves while it does this. To do ANY training at this time would only stress it! Patience...... the best advise to give the hardest to take.

Re: What do you think of this Chinese Banyan?
I think this is a tree with good potential. After it got used to its new location, I would try some changes; for example I would move the basis of the tree more to the left and the strong aerial root more to the right side of the pot. I think so it would look more massive and balanced out. I`ve made the experience, that when you put the lower part of a ficus tree beneath some kind of clear plastic-foil, the tree starts to grow lots of aerial-roots(when the air is wet enough). Within some months it becomes a strong and tropiclike looking basis. I, personally realy like this kinds of roots.. it only takes some time bevore you can remove the foil.
So I wish you lots of fun with your tree! Thomas |

I agree with Jay. I think this is a benji also. I would like to see what the other sides of the tree look like before suggesting anything. I would also wait quite a while before doing anything. I found that sometimes benji's can be kind of stubborn if you try to doing anything to quickly to them.
