What do with new maple

Hi all, I bought this Japanese Red Maple this week... what shall I do with it? I would like to reduce the leaves (can this be done more than once a year?) but am not sure what to do with the little side branch. Should it be encouraged to be more horizontal or vertical or should I just let it do its own thing?

looks good to me. If it was my tree I would probably make the 2 layers more distinguishable.

To distinguish the top piece a bit more I would trim back only a bit off of the left (up by the red & green leaf) which would round it off. I would also do the same to the upper-right most to round of that side as well.

I would round out the bottom area and probly wire it more evenly in line with the rest.

but thats just me.

Hi Carrottop,

Do you have any more pics? Back, right and left side shots would be good.

Hi Carrot,

Personally I'd plant this in a large growing container or even the ground for a few years to let the trunk develop some girth and then cut back to develop taper.

All the best,

Aaron
