Question What to do?

I'm a newbie to Bonsai. About 2 months ago I collected this pine from the forrest near by. I'm under the impression that this might be a good Bonsai. But I find it very hard to figure out what to do. First of all I'm going to change the pot. This was just the only Pot I had when I collected the tree. I would be very grateful for any design suggestion on this.

Close-up of the trunk

I find the trunk quite intresting, but also quite hard to deal with concerning design.

My two cents

This is what I would do with this tree if it were mine.Remove the long straight branch and turn the remaining branch into a cascade style.I can't see the branch structure so I have drawn a pic of what way to arrange the branches.

ps. Treenut will not accept responsibility if you follow my instructions and turn your bonsai into a bin-sai.
good luck!

I can't see the trunk very clearly. The soil pot and trunk are all kind of a murky lump on my screen. The hook at the top looks interesting though.

Remember if you choose a white backdrop you will need to overexpose your photo by as much as 2 to 2-1/2 stops. The camera can't figure out what's going on and wants to make everything grey. In this case, a grey backdrop means a black tree.

Make sure the pine's healthy before you do any work on it, and don't transplant out of season. Late fall or mid spring would be good.

Regards,

Matt

Thanks for the tip treenut. I guess it's gonna kill me cutting the other branch off.... As for style I guess there is realy no other option than cascade. Heres another photo from a top view.

Tree surgery

When I was new to Bonsai I could not bring myself to cut any branches off at all! My first experience of taking a tree full of lush growth and beutiful branches to bonsai class and coming home with a stump was quite traumatic I thought those guys were crazy. Now three years later when I get a tree I remove just about everything in the knowledge that in twelve months time I will have the beginings of beutifully shaped pruned and wired branches instead of straight sticks poking skyward. The reason I start a tree today is not so I can have a Bonsai today but so I can have one in three years time.

Hi Johannes,

I think the thick branch is bendable. I would use it to make a cascading branch. You could use the small branch to make a apex above it. That way you wouldn't have to cut anything.

Now thats nice material to work with! I would wait until spring though befor any decisions were made. Let it acclimate.

And think about it, patience...
