What to do?

I just bought this Red Japanese Maple (Bloodgood) and would like some opinions on what to do with it. It's about 5-5.5ft tall at the moment!! I really would like to know how much I should hack off the top and when? I am going to build a grow box today and it will go in there until I feel it is ready to come out. Any info would be nice!! Thanks

I know your looking for some advice, but I like the tree and I have a hard time with maples here where i live. Most of mine are grown in containers. Thanks for sharing the nice maple with us.

Peace

Bob

Honestly, look for one with movement or taper, or be prepared to invest the time to get it. Cutting this back looks like it would give you a short tree without taper and movement. Maybe some other views would help, particularly of the lower 3 feet. This looks like a nice patio tree though.

By the way, I was going to ask you why you have a maple in your living room but then I saw the mattock leaning against the wall next to the shears and the 6-pack, and I figure it would be better if I don't know.

Better put the cat out, though before you start swinging, and don't forget to wipe your feet on the way out!

Regards,

Matt

If this were my tree and I wanted a bonsai, I would start by doing a couple air layers this year, getting three trees out of this instead of one. Next year I would do a trunk chop. See my notes on picture.

Good luck,

Will

It's obviously grafted, as almost every acer palmatum at nurseries and garden centers are. Please don't take this as an attack, but this is not really bonsai material. This would make a nice tree to shade your deck in a few years. If you want a bonsai, I suggest finding better material.

I only say this because of probably 6 or 7 futile years of wasting time and money on poor nursery stock or even good nursery stock that had no potential of ever being an acceptable bonsai. I'd like to save others the same frustration.
