Well Here I Go

About 3 years ago I got this crazy idea that I would like to learn me a new hobby and bonsai was it. After doing all the usual wrong things , I thought hey check out the internet and well here I am. I have learned alot from everyone and seeing how its almost repotting time here in Tennessee why not post a picture and see what everyone thinks it is the onlyway to truly learn .

Here is some info about the tree
Japanese Black Pine
8" tall
6.5" wide
1/2" diameter
soil kitty litter ( I will never do that again I promise )

What I hope to do
remove any unnssary branches and wire the rest
repot in a shallower but wider grow box
soil : turface ,pine bark and coarse sand
maybe put in ground if nessary

Any comments or suggestions will be greatly appreciated to help me get started down the bonsai road and I hope to drag as many of you as I can with me.Thanks

Steve

How big a tree are you developing here, and how long are you willing to wait to get there?

If this were a shohin, for example I would probably cut it back just above the first branch cluster within the next 2 years. In the meantime I would wire that cluster to produce a replacement apex and first branch.

P.S. I used red backgrounds once for a photo session in the museum. I don't think I will be using them again!

Regards,

Matt.

Matt

I was looking for this tree to be around 10" to 12" tall when its all said and done . I did think about making a shohin out of it but wasnt sure if the needles would reduce enough to make it look right.

Matt,
Could you please explain why you would cut it back at the first branches? I'm still learning, so I don't mean to sound ignorant.
Could you maybe draw some lines so I could sort of see what you had in mind for this tree. I'm still at the point where I have trouble looking at raw material and knowing where to go from there.
Best Regards,
Dave

Steve,
Very weak pine my friend. I would pull all dead needles toss on some blood meal put in in the sun and let it go. But thats me...

Ask again same time next year.

Toyota,

No I didn't say I would cut it right now. It needs to grow! Later, one can make some decisions, like will it be a larger slant style, or perhaps a shorter informal upright.

Now I can see it isn't going to have much taper, so personally at that point, after it's grown, I would likely cut it back to the first set of branches to get a shorter tree with a comparatively thicker trunk and the illusion of more taper.

Drawing a line right through the center of the tree is going to give you the wrong idea because it isn't time for that now. Get it bigger, healthier and thicker, then decide.

Post 1 or 3 could be an informal upright if the tree's about half its current height. Post 3 makes a slant if you want it to be a taller tree. After it's growing vigorously, from that point on out just keep it from having too many branches at any point as it grows or it will get Bee's Knees bulges in the trunk. Three is tops for any single point.

Regards,

Matt

Yea ... I know it needs some more grow time but this being the first year for repotting my trees I wanted to know if anything else should be done . I will probably just change the soil and trim the roots abit and put it in a grow box. Thanks

Congratulations on making the leap from observer to participant. When you say middle Tennessee...how far from Memphis? There's a great bonsai nursery a bit south of there in Mississippi. You could pick up a pretty nice tree for not a whole lot of money(or you you could pick up a really nice tree for a whole bunch of money ).....that way you get to enjoy the art while you wait for your trees to mature a bit more.

I don't know too much about pines, but,i would be inclined to agree with Matt....pot that one up,well draining soil, fertilise well and in a couple of years it'll be ready for a "first cut".

Whatever you decide...be patient, enjoy and don't loose interest if it takes a little longer than you expected.
