This is my favorite part of these forums: before and afters. That little guy is doing wonderfully after all the hard work and attention you gave it. I mourned a little bit at the loss of that bottom right branch, but all it did was transform it into another bonsai with just as much, if not more, potential.

And that is definitely a great find for a good price. I'm always browsing the local Lowes' and Home Depot's for training and practice plants, and they do have a good gem in the piles every now and then. My co-workers have been teasing me all summer during my seasonal work at Lowe's for spending my lunch breaks sifting through junipers for good bonsai stock.

Hello alyanna..lol... I know the feeling about people thinking your crazy about sifting through tons of trees to find the perfect one... My thing is the trees on the side of the road lately...lol..........I have to be careful not to drive right off a cliff while seeing all the yamadori pines on the side of the roads....I have spotted a few good ones recently and I may go back to further inspect them.

Also, I sometimes share your mouning for the lower branch. When I look at the old pic, I'm like hmmm, it didn't look too bad. However, then when I see the new pic, I realiize it was the right decision. Also, not that I am a strict rule person, but that branch came from an inside curve of the trunk. It kind of interfered with the movement of the tree. Also, when the tree ramifies, it will need the room to grow.

Now that I go back and look closer, that lower branch did mess up the flow of the trunk and upper branches. I hadn't really notice until you pointed it out (and put on my glasses...oi). It was a nice, strong branch but I believe you did make the right choice! It makes the rest of the tree even stronger.

Rob, that is a great find, the branch that you stripped down will add some really nice balance to the tree, it looks awesome.

Yews DO have a rather difficult growth habit which is essentially straight up! This DOES make non-columner designs somewhat tricky.

IHaving said that, I very much like what you've done so far. I have a whole bunch of collected Yews which I'm growing as a little grove. I'll post pictures later...
