Great for Home Depot, Rob. I better start looking there...

However...I think it's time to stop before take off too much...

Patience, my friend.

Nice yew and great initial styling... I think that great yews can often be found in nurseries, but it definitely takes some luck to get something at HD!

Have you uncovered the nebari? Is it right at the surface of that pot?

My 2 cents: I would reduce that jin on the left significantly... and maybe bend it down a bit (split it at the base?). This will be alot easier now than when the wood dries to stone (well, bending it will be impossible once its dry).

keep us updated!

I bought one sort of similar to that. I actually didn't get a good look at it before I bought it I kinda just went with the luck of the draw. Same place same price. It ended up having a nice root flare and plenty of branches and future jins to work with, I left the stubs from cut branches but didn't jin them yet.

It's for a contest in another forum so I wont post a pic of it until thats over. Good luck with yours, it looks great by the way.

nice work on a good find. A few people said to reduce the jin, i'm one to leave it then cut later. Yes bend it down a little, but you can always reduce it down the line. After all, its just getting started in its training life and depending on how the main branches thicken up and buds that come out you might want it later down the road.

Anywho, you can always reduce later you can't really regrow as much certainty.

Patience, it will turn into a nice little gem.

I think I'm inspired to take yet another trip this spring season to our local nusery.

So yea, Home Depot and Lowes can be alright at times but I have found the health of the trees not always to be the best. A nice local nursery might be a safer bet for everyone inspired to go out and start hunting now. We have a smaller chain called Stauffers of Kissle Hill (SKH) in my area and a fellow bonsaist of mine found some nice stock at a family owned nursery recently.

Anyways, there's potential in just about anything.

Please update the thread as things progress - I will subscribe.

If you styled it this year I would wait until next spring to repot. Let it recover from being styled for a year.

You could just slip pot it as well. I styled mine and repotted it but the roots were so think I didn't remove very much of it. I'll leave it for a year or two and then work the roots again. Just and idea. By the way, you've made me look at mine again and I plan on cutting it down a bit more to create a better apex, thanks!

Personally, I like the bottom branch. It already looks like a bonsai. Ill have to go check 'yew' out at Hope Depot next time... sorry, I couldn't resist the pun. Anywho... There is a local nursery around my place that I found a nice golden barberry that may have some shohin potential. Its great to get bonsai for cheap. Feels sort of like finding treasure when you get material for less that $30. Keep us posted in the future with this one.

Thanks everyone. I should state that I had intentions of reducing the jins. However, I couldn't spend anymore time with it so they were just left for the time being. I did end up getting it in a grow pot this weekend and took off that bottom branch. I took off quite a bit of roots too. Also reduced the jins, but left one in the back because I had other branches wired to it .. ....It will stay in this pot for 2 years to recover with little work if any and it will be allowed to grow freely.

Here are the pics. The small branch at the bottom is actually a back branch. It depends on the angle that the tree is viewed how much it shows. I may wire it back more. Final measurements, 6 3/4 inches tall with a 1 1/2 inch base.
