I think we are going to have to use the process of elimination on this.

The bark rules out American Hornbeam, beech, zelkova, and pretty much any indigenous elm. The leaf on the other hand, rules out hickory (no teeth). I think deacon is right about hophornbeam being the front runner as of now. I'm afraid that's the best I can do as of now. When it seeds, the answer will be obvious though.

I am from Arkansas, too, and these things grow like weeds everywhere. I have one in my back yard that was cut to a small stump that barely sticks out of the ground. It has started growing several new trunks and mowing them only produces more growth. The tree was cut before I moved in, but I kept it mowed until recently. Now I am waiting for the growth to get large enough to layer one of the trunks. I always assumed that they were elms, as well. If they are not, and someone can positively ID them, it would be great. As for the seeds, they do not seed in "hops" or "beans." The few that I have seen seed have single, small seeds that are kinda circular.
