"V" Trunk Chop - 4" Diameter - What Next?

Hi,

Finally got this thing out of the ground.

"V" chop according to Naka.

I plan to now wrap at "V" with grafting tape and secure with jute. I will also keep spagnum moss at the site of the chop so it does not dry out. My soil is about 25% fir bark and the rest is soil from where the tree was in the ground and potting soil.

Is this an appropriate soil mixture at this stage?

Also, does my plan seem appropriate for growing shoots out the top of the trunk?

How do I "score" the tree at the "V" chop to promote growth? What tool and/or techniques?

I have also attached some leaves on branches that were at the top of the tree.

Can you identify this tree? Genus and species.

Thanks again.

V.

Can't help you with the I.D., but a V chop should be a a V not a ~

I can barely see a depression.

Regards,

Matt

Turned to show "V"

Good point TreeBay.

Maybe this helps.

I may need to create a deeper "V".

I'm not sure.

What about "scoring" at the chop site to promote growth?

Thanks TreeBay.

It's much too shallow. If you're following Bonsai Techniques I, you'll notice in the technique description (Page 137 of my vintage edition) the cut depth is 2/3 the thickness of the trunk, and it's off center. Yours appears to be about 1/5 the thickness of the trunk and it's on center.

Also see fig 276, which has the interior of the trunk carved out deeply.

I have never scored trunks so I can't offer any opinion on that. I have also not rubbed peanut butter on them, either.

Regards,

Matt

I haven't read Naka's books, feel free to smack me, what does a V cut promote?

I've heard, but never seen, bad things involving trunk abuse (scoring, choking, drilling hundreds of tiny holes, stabbing with a pin), I'ld be careful.

ID: Pretty definitely an Elm. Ulmus sp. I'm not sure as to the spcies. If you hold a gun to my head, I'm going to say a Slippery Elm. Ulmus rubra. Though I'd rather not testfy to that in court.

Interesting choice for Bonsai. I've been told that American Elm works for Bonsai and I'd conclude from that that Slippery Elm, being very similar to U. americana, should also.

If it really is a Slippery Elm.

With an offset V, A major branch on one side and a minor branch on the other - or groups of branches with similar proportions.

Matt
