Ume--- Suggestions Wanted

I have this Ume (just under 10 years old) that is about 2 foot tall and has a 4" trunk at the soil line. I have a little die back on the bottom and inner branches (no doubt due to less light source).

I was wondering what you all though would be the correct course of action. I am providing four photo's of it, from far out to close in.

I would like to here from the Ume people and others re virts, suggestions, health care, tips etc

Thanks

Paul

You could start by cutting off everything outside the frame in your close-in photo. Fertilize well and pinch back buds to two to three nodes as they grow out. That will help restore vitality in the lower & interior branches. Repotting will confirm your selection of "fronts"

Regards,

Matt

Whoa!! I LOVE ume's... looks like one of Rip's Babies.. lol

anyways... i heard that Ume's tend to grow a lot so you need to cut them back hard... a lot.. I know because my parents have one on the outside of our house, and we never cut it and it looks wild...lol

Paul:
It seems to me that Treebay is leading you on the right path....

If this were my tree, I would clear out all the small growth that appears top be growing any which way...

At least clear out enough to see the trunk movement. Then study the tree... There is too much that we can not see to give any kind of advice.

I agree that Matt has a great plan. As I look into the future, if their is one past pruning this tree back, I wonder if the tree can be carved. The branching just above the soil will determine the movement of the tree (if any). If I can get past that....then I may have something.

Clump style?

If you ground layered it where the branching starts do you think it would make a nice clump style?
