Miguel; In my opinion this is a very nice elm. I would only change three minor things. (1) fatten up the number one branch on the right and orient it slightly upward, (2) cut back on some of the strong upward growing secondary branches on the third branch up on the right side, and (3) redirect the apex/trunkline at the very top to avoid a long straight section. heyMikey!!

Miguel, Fantastic little Ulmus.....love the lines it has going for it now. I would (if it were mine) bring the canopy in a little tighter with some ramification......time is all you would need my friend.

Charles....whaddya mean?

I didnt understand what your suggestion was.....

Paul

I think he meant to make the upward bend first and not waiting for after the desired girth is attained. I would agree with that, I read an article that if you wire a branch up-wards it thinks it the leader and grows much faster.

Big Smile

Miguel, Adam, Charles and Paul; To clarify my earlier post I felt that the first right hand branch should be oriented upward only about 5-10 degrees to approximate the slant of the first branch on the left, but mainly to make the rainbow shape less obvious. Ideally this branch would have some zigzag movement as many of the others do (sharp branch bending however is dangerous to try on brittle elms). I did not mean to wire the branch sharply upward. Secondly, this branch could (and should) be fattened up to exceed the branches above it ( I think letting its growth go unchecked for 6-12 months before pruning would best fatten it up), while simultaneously and frequently pinching back on the higher branches to keep them from fattening. Sorry for the lack of clarity in my first post as I tend to use too few words (I have snail-like keyboard skills). heyMikey!!

The first branch may not be necessary in the future, but it originates a little too low on the trunk (missing the apex of the curve it seems to orginate from), so that's why it seems to need to go UP to reach the right position before it comes down.

If you want a branch there, you could thread graft one through the trunk or just deal with the imperfect shape. As the tree grows, this branch may prove unnecessary, anyways.

Regards,

Matt
