Ulmus Parvifolia.

Photo. 07.07.02. When I purchased this tree, 2 years ago (in a sale), it had been badly neglected. It was one mass of foliage, had to give the trunk a jolly good scrub as it was covered in a brown/green type of algae/moss. Repotted as the soil was very sandy and smelt very 'fusty'. Pruned everything hard back to lateral branches. Have since been letting new growth 'grow-out' and then trim slightly. Objective is to have larger pads.

Looks to me like this very healthy looking Elm was quite fortunate to get such a kind lady as its owner!

Best regards, Fred

Jus one suggestion with this tree: Have you thought about changing the positioning of this tree. It feels to me like it is falling out of the pot. I would prefer to have in straighter in the pot with the apex over the middle of the pot. I agree that the folage pads need to be large aswell, but great rescue job on this one.

Can see what you mean David, intended to have it out of the pot this coming Spring to root prune and give fresh soil so can do that at the same time. Thank you. Kind Regards - Kath

Hi Kath,

This is a nice find, and looks like you have been taking real good care of it.
I agree with David about the angle. Have you tought about making this into a semi-cascade ? I know this sounds kind of wild, but just tilt the tree about 90 degrees to the right. I cannot make a virtual for you since I'm working right now. (or I should be... :-) ) . Also I think the foliage pads would look much better if they were less pom-pom-ish, and flatter and wider.
Just a few thoughts...

regards, René

Goedemorgen Rene,
No,had never thought of a cascade for this tree. Am constantly clipping the top of those pads to get them flatter and leaving growth on outside edges to grow-out more, hopefully one day I'll get the pads how I want them, larger and flatter

Yes, this is a very healthy tree..i tilted it 20 degrees to the left as David suggested and trimmed the pads a lil..brought the first branch on the right down .. with a lil more growing in the apex it will be in balance..nice tree. If this were mine i'd work the branchin to be more elm like, instead of the poodle look.
....looked at the semi cascade..

Tom, spot on with the positioning thanks.

Kath I hope you can see now that you tree looks more stable at that angle and looks more powerful I guess.

I too agree with Tom that the folage pads should not look like "poodle" pads. I have done this several time with my elms too.

Also I would like to see the first branch actually removed. I know it sounds a drastic thing to do but I will try and show you a virtual using Tom's virtual.

Kath it is difficult to try and show you what I mean by no poodle pads in a virtual. This is how I see the most likely result of the tree one day. If you can imagine the top canopy and how the branches in there are arranged then that is the way that the branches on the lower branches need to be arranged to avoid the poodle pads. I know my virtual still looks as if there are poodle pads but it is difficult to look realistic in a virtual.
Hope this gives you a few more ideas.

David
