Ulmus Elegantissima

I got this elm "Jacqueline Hillier" from a nursery about a few days ago. It was put up to a bargain because of its state. I bought it as i believe that it would just regrow is leaves on the next spring. The leaves were all gone because it dried up during the summer. It was lucky enought to have survived with some good foliage on some of its parts.

Right now I am thinking of what direction I would like this plant to go...I am planning to remove a trunk/branch which I labeled by numbers...I thought about removing #3 branch in the future...

Its root is also mess, a huge root ball has already formed...Ima not sure which time is the best to pruned them if this fall or on next spring...

I am also thinking of removing the upper branch of the main trunk that goes to the center...

Mike others may differ, but I feel there is an additional price you paid in getting this bargain, Time. If it were mine, I'd wait and let it grow out next spring to see where it is going. You do not know for sure what is and isn't the live parts of this tree. Actually waiting a little, costing you time, isn't that bad a price to pay.
During this time plan.

Mike, great buy for $4.00. Airlayers are next year, by then you will have a better idea of how the tree is doing.

Keep thinking!

Funny little trees these - I have 5 in the ground and they can grow at a phenominal rate, while retainng the extremely compact leaf growth.

I have seen mine drop all leaves early, at the first sign of dry weather - so what you have appears pretty typical for this tree. Additionally I find that they are prone to losing all leaves on the "inside" of the tree. You should check if any of the branches are actually dead - I suspect not. (Scrape bark off to see)...

I think repotting in early winter is your best way forward - give them more time to recover. I had one spend a whole year looking like yours does now because I repotted it too late.

Of the five I have, four are from cuttings from the original - I thought they were almost as easy to root as Chinese Elm but every cutting I took this year failed to root. Hmmm...

Be careful with fertiliser - they are very very sensitive to fertiliser on the leaves. I use cheap general garden fertiliser pellets (the size of Akadama grains) and sprinkle them around my trees - I accidentally got some on some leaves and they just shrivelled and died within a day. Got some on some rooted cuttings - they all died, just like that! I find Elm in general to be sensitive to fertiliser, but the Hillier's are beyond a joke.

Here's a photo of one in full leaf:

this variety can make excellent bonsai. Here is mine, which is around fifty years old.

best regards

Beautiful.

Have you tried rooting cuttings from it at all?

How did it go?
