Two Week Update

Hello Everyone,

It's been two weeks since this american elm was defoliated. This photo shows after defoliating/wiring and yesterday. Even the smallest twigs produced viable buds and leafed out. The problem branch (too thick) near the apex budded back to old wood, so I shortened it a bit. If and when I'm sure it's ok, I'll cut it back some more to regrow a branch more in scale. Other too long or thick branches can also be shortened when the new twigs start to harden off.

Nick,

Thanks for the compliment. This is one of my favorite trees. It was collected in a river spillway in January 2002. I think it's 16" to the top of the old trunk. It was the first time I've defoliated, so I'm really psyched that it came back so strong.

Thanks Again,

David

This is going to be a real beauty. I like the trunk and the way its carved. Where did you learn your carving skills? I like all the carving you do on the jins you leave. They look good, and natural.

Al,

Mother Nature gets all the credit for this one. As for other carving attempts I've posted, it's trial and error and hoping to learn from the failures.

Thanks,

David

Hello Everyone,

I've been working on a virtual built on the existing branching which may be achievable by the fall if everything goes well. Any suggestions for improvement? Any area in particular that needs more work?

Thanks,

David

Hi David

What a beauty, can't beat nature for giving drama to a tree.

IMHO, i think that the tree would benefit from being tilted slightly to the left when you repot it. I would give a more consistent image. The base of the trunk is very straight and tilting it would blend it better with the movement you have in the top third.

I have attached a crude virtual to show what I mean.

Best of luck and keep us posted on progress.

Mike
