I just recently purchased this Trident. This is my first Trident and I'm relatively new to Bonsai. It is 12 inches wide at the top and 19 inches tall from the soil line. It is in a 12 inch round mica pot. On one side it has hardly any branches and I'm sure it needs some shaping up. But I don't have a clue as to what to do to it and when to do it. I'm in south east Tennessee...zone 7. Our weather here now is warm like the 70's and 80's during the day and the 50's and 60's at night.Any suggestions as what to do to shape this tree would be greatly appeciated.

How do you envision the tree? My inclination would be to cut it back hard and see what else popped lower on the trunk. The lowest branch is too high, for the trunk diameter, unless you want to work toward a broom style.
Look at a lot of photos of tridents, then analyze what attracts you and what you would like to work towards. Then show us what your goal is, and someone can help you. Joanie

thats a tree with alot of potential for the future i imagine there is a really good book... "Bonsai with japanese maple by Peter Adams" this book shows many good exmaples on how to style japanese maples...the way to prune them and to clean up the branches..... i find...that book i received recently..is a great investment towards my maples.... |

I agree with Joanie - cut it back. I'd cut it back to within an inch or so of the roots and make a shohin of it. That tends to be my prevailing advice...for anything which is too leggy. You could airlayer it I suppose - but I can never be bothered and it's a bit of a hassle. You may get away with rooting the cut-off top; I believe tridents root relatively easily.
