I'm liking the oval/round pot ideas better than the squared off corners for that tree

just my 2 cents...

I would prefer to see it in a nice glazed oval Tokoname pot. Attached is a picture of one of my friend Matt's many tridents and i think the pot suites the trident extremely well. Since seeing many of his trees, I am rethinking ALL of my pot selections. I love the material and can't wait to see your final choice!
Kind Regards,

~ Jay

just a bare spot. the branches still need to be wired to fill that in.

Jump on board with the dislike of the pot everyone. I appreciate the input and have put in my order for an erin pottery pot. I think I will still go with this pot for the spring and continue to refine this tree until it is where I want to be and then swap into the erin pot when the trees finished.

I think he's refering to a grow pot for branch development. The branches are going to have to be pretty thick for it not to look like a old pruned shrub with that size trunk. It's still got a few years to go before looking like an aged tree.

A few more tips for your consideration:

If you really want a tree at 12" tall, you really need to be making the cut at around 8" then growing a leader from the top of the chop. This leader is then grown out until its around 2/3 of the trunk thickness at the chopsite. Then its chopped again anywhere from an inch to 3 inches above the original chop, then grow another leader and repeat. This build really nice taper all the way to the top. In the meantime you can also build the branches, lower branches should be left to grow till they are again 2/3 of the desired thickness before working on ramification.

All this apex/branch building requires fast growth and would be better in a larger grow pot. But the current pot isn't too bad.

You can probably fill in the bare area using thread grafts see here , another use for those grown out branches

I find it best to hold off pot selection until the tree is almost show ready, as trees very rarely end up exactly as envisioned.

Hope that was of some help.

Huh?

I don't believe branch building will require a larger container, trunk building yes.

If the tree is healthy and growing vigorously, building branches should happen relatively quickly by selecting the right buds as they pop and rubbing out unwanted ones...chanelling the trees energy into the branches you've selected works well.

Don't forget (as many people do) that the first internode on your branches should be somewhat close to the trunk. This often means cutting off the first leggy spring shoots and picking the next ones that usually have shorter internodes.
