Trident Maple Opinions
I decided to take a quick picture or two of a Trident Maple I'm working on. With the leaves still off for winter it's easier to see the tree.
I'm debating two changes: 1) Bringing the apex down closer to where the two green dots are. 2) Removing the left side larger root base. I'd love to hear some Opinions and see some virtuals. Thanks wmcorcor |

Be careful about your root work. If there are not too many essential roots coming from the end of the large one, you can begin removing it. Shorten the feeder roots from it considerably this year, and when you get good feeder roots closer to the nebari, cut this one at an angle facing up that will look natural with the base when it heals. Use cut putty over most of the cut but not at the bottom where you want new roots to appear.
I don't know that I would shorten this tree that much, as it has fair taper now and will become very blunt at the point you mentioned. Good luck, it looks like it will become a nice tree! Chris |

How about this, similar to what you suggested but the apex cut is different.
Chris is right about the root, check when repotting if this is possible. could have half the trees root system on it, or it could have none. Good luck, should turn out a nice tree. Delboy. |

Delboy I'll check the roots when I repot in a few weeks. I like it that size and with that root/nebari look. Thanks

I don't mind the height but have to agree with the root having to go.

Thanks...I'll see what's under the soil in a few weeks. I do like the shortened virtual.

I couldn't resist a little virt for keeping the trunk...I like the height and the curve.

So far almost everyone likes the tall version with out the root. I'm beginning to think I'm alone in the shorter version.
Thanks for the virtual. I do like it. |

I read this post with interest as I have a Trident with exactly the same problem. I didn't think it was a fixable problem....if the root ball is strong on the rest of the tree can it just be cut straight back?
