Trident Maple - Group
Here is a trident maple group that I have been working on for only a year. When it was given to me, I had decided to give it to some one else as I didn't see much future in it. The problem was, no one else wanted it either. It was every bit of four ft. tall and resembeled a bush more than a tree. After studying it for a while I saw a glimmer of hope in there. Anyway this is our second year together. I see many more in our future. The right side needs to be worked on,as it is a little weaker than the left.

Re: Trident Maple - Group
I really like your maple group.
Why didn't anybody want it? Was it just so overgrown or was it in the famous bush-style? Ossi Hanhinen

Re: Trident Maple - Group
Thomas,
If you still want to get rid of it, I'm sure we all have to draw a number. It's a great group of Acers, maybe it needs a little trimming but other then that... wish it was in front of my door with my other bonsai's. Regards, Eric |

Re: Trident Maple - Group
The silhouette is nice and the backlight makes the photo looks great. I can't tell in this light, but it seems there may be some problem with the trunks crossing over one another?
Regards, Matt

Re: Trident Maple - Group
Zeb;
the reason nobody wanted it was because it didn't resemble a bonsai at all. It was planted in an old oil drain pan. As I mentioned, it was probably about four ft. in height. If it wasn't for my wife telling me to reconsider before throwing it out, it woul be gone now. I'm glad I did and I'm glad the person who gave it to me didn't want it anymore. Treebay; Yes that one trunk in the front that crosses over is the only major defect. As we know this is a no no in bonsai. If I don't lose that trunk and develop new growth on the farthest trunk on the right, This will just be another ho hum specimen.

Re: Trident Maple - Group
Tomas J: Here is my openion of your maple group. The first item is the number of trees, I think that there are four as I can just bairly make out one in the back of the arangement. You may think of adding a tree or deleating a tree to achieve an odd number of trees. The next thing that I see is that all of the trees are the same hight. One tree croses the main tree and the second tree has an angle into the group. If you cut the crosser to be the shortest tree it would not cross the main tree and you could regrow a new crown and if you cut the second tree at the point that it angles into the group you could redirect it outward and re grow a new shorter crown. Now the three main trees would be of diffrent hights and you have kept the close trunks that are desirable and eliminated the two main problems that I see which were the fact that all of the trees are the same hight and the one tree croses the main tree. The thing to remember about forrest araingments is this trunk arangement is most importiant after rootage because it is most difficult to change, in maples branches and crowns can be placed and created any where you want them to be and can be removed and regrown at the artests will. I hope that this gives you some new angles to think about.

Re: Trident Maple - Group
Gettin' better! Might be a good idea to have the left trunk just 2/3 the height of the primary.
Or lose it all together... The silhouette is great, but the trunks moving together at the top defies logic a little. Ominous music: dum-DEE dum dum

Re: Trident Maple - Group
Thomas,
This is in relation to your Elm. I like it very well. You've taken a bit of criticism on its positioning......but you keep it where you like. I do have a thought for you to consider. The tree seems quite dense with foliage. You might consider thinning it out a bit....to break up the "single mass" impression......and by doing this the the tree would look more tree-like, and, as we say in my club, you'd make room for the birds to fly though. I's a great tree, and you should be proud and happy with it. Robert.........in Sta.Cruz
