Trident Maple Defoliation

I've had this "trunk" of a trident maple for 3 years. The first few years after the major chop, I worked on developing branches and an apex. Now, the trident is happy and healthy and the spring leaves have hardened off. I want to work on branch ramification.

On the day of July 10, the tree looked like this:

In order to work on the ramification, I cut off each leaf individually (leaving the petiole), thus performing a complete defoliation of the trident.

On the evening of July 10, the tree looked like this:

In a few weeks, I expect that the petioles will fall off and I will have a whole new canopy of smaller leaves. Stay tuned...

Candy,
That looks pretty close to TWO really root bound ones I just HAD to get repotted last week ( right about the 10th).
I find myself forced into a bunch of out-of-season repotting this year due to a bunch of different circumstances.
G'luck for both of us.
Regards,
Dale

Candy,
Please keep us updated as to how long it takes for you to get your leaves back and also how much ramification you get.

Thanks
Adam

Hi Candy,

Those first couple branches really need to grow quite a bit to catch up. I don't think I would have defoliated them. It's not likely to hurt them, but it is a setback for a year.

Excellent photos. #2 would make a great "Complete Defoliation" example for the wiki!

Regards,

Matt

Cool

I defoliated the top of my Deshojo last month. The leaves are just coming out. Got a half red and half green tree now. The only thing is that the leaf size looks odd against the older green leaves.

Candy, I love the trunk. A lot of character and age to it.

I agree about the lower branches. I also think that the whole tree isn't really ready for ramification yet.

I'd let those bottom branches grow for at least a couple of years and thicken them up a lot. I'd also let the other branches grow also and thicken them up too, not as much as the bottom branches .....you know.

I'd say the tree would be ready for ramification by leaf pruning in 3 or 4 years and it should turn out really nice.

Nice tree Candy.
