Trident forests
Here are my two forests... they came from trees that I bought last year which had all been in one big growing box together. There were a total of nineteen Tridents in the box, and they had been together for at least five years, without repotting. I had a terrible time getting them seperated, had to take a kitchen knife to the roots finally! The first forest is just a chunk of trees as they came out together, without as much root trimming. I was scared to cut more root off.
So it's potted way too high in the pot, and with enough muck to hold it all together until it can be fixed. However, later in the day as I continued working to untangle the big mess, I got much bolder. (okay, bolder isn't the word... tired and exasperated is more like it!!) So the second forest has fewer roots and sits better in the pot. I wasn't able to position the trees correctly, I was just glad to get them all in the pot at that point. When I told Ron my troubles, he wrote a wonderful article on how to hold them in the pot, which I will be so happy to utilize next year! Even though they aren't where they should be, and they aren't pruned properly yet, it's a relief to have a start on them. Over the next few years, these forests will grow with my experience, and together we will begin to achieve a more polished look. So, please no hard criticism yet ... I know they are very flawed, and can only wait until the time comes to fix them better.Joanie |

Interesting, seeing them in the photos points out something very plainly. The groups whose roots were left more intact is MUCH farther along in leafing out. The other group, while healthy, is obviously less able to produce leaves at this point. They have been in exactly the same environment all of their lives, and were identical.

Very nice start Joanie I particularly like the first group. Once you get them lower in the pot I think you'll have a very nice forest. If it were me I wouldn't try to separate them I think they look great the way they are positioned now.

Joanie, good job. I like the 1st group better as well. Can't wait to see what it would become 1 year later. :-)

I wouldn't change the position too much of the first group.... looks like a great start...

I would work at combining the two groups as soon as possible. More trees the better (and more realistic) I always say. OK, so I just said it just now, but I think you could pull it off.

Joanie,
Very nice start. One thing, think shorter--trees are too tall, add on the apices that will develop will add another couple of inches. Take off a third more on each now. |

Rockm, yes, I agree. I was so tired, and should not have tried to do all of the repotting in one day. I took a third off of them already because they have been allowed to grow really, really tall. I wanted to wait and consider before taking more off.
![]() Thank you everyone, for your encouragement and your ideas. I'll continue to post the progress here, and with your help these groups will become something worth seeing. ![]() Joanie |
