Trees In 3-D

As a beginner I have found that many of my first attempts at bonsai yeilded 2 dimensional disasters. I attribute this to the hours and hours I spend pouring over 2-D pictures in books. I find myself wishing we could start a gallery with the traditional presentation view as well as a side and top view. I would gain much from this perspective as I struggle with branch placement in the rear of the tree.

Cre8,
Probably a good Idea. What are you struggling with specifically? Maybe its a choice of better pre bonsai that is your next hurdle,eh?.

Could be. I hope to remedy that this weekend when I take my first class at a not quite local bonsai nursery.

I find that I automatically cut a branch in the back of the tree if it is lower than the planned first or second branch. I also worry about brances in the back that appear to cross other side brances when viewed from the front. I am just uncomfortable with the whole back side of the tree and I know it needs to be remedied if I am going to attain any level of success.

Cre8,
If you don't have it already what you need is an association, where you can have other experienced bonsai people look at your trees, your work, and assist you with your development. You need to join a club if you are not already a member. There is only so much these very generous people can do for you here.

I am taking a class this weekend. All I asked for was pictures of the top and side of some of the trees. Why is that more than people of this forum can do for me? I understand I am a beginner but patience seems to be the lifeblood of this pursuit so I assumed asking for specifics I feel I could benefit from would be alright.

Cre8tive,
Keep all these things in mind and DO NOT be afraid to ask as many questions as you feel you need to during your class this weekend.

Read David N's suggestions in THIS THREAD I think he explains it very well and it is something that helped me understand quite a bit. Thanks David

Hope this helps
Adam

Creative,

I think this a good idea. I'll try to take top-views more often when I take photographs in the future. It may be a while, though, because I don't currently have any trees that merit display.

I've attached front and top views of an in-progress white pine. Lots of work to be done here, but in the meantime perhaps you can see how a relatively flat-looking front view actually corresponds to considerable 3-D depth.

Best regards,
Carl

Cre8, you are not alone, when i first started bonsai I did exactly the same as you have done, why? because as you are doing (well until this weekend any way) I was learning from books. I actually think that its quite important to show all sides, it gives more depth and quite often people are using the wrong side as the front, which this allows you to see.

I was taking some pictures of my hawthorn today on my turntable and accidently had my digi camera on video and stated recording and thought wouldn't it be great to be able to put this on the forum whilst spinning the tree on the turntable (TB did something like that where you could move the tree round manually which was similar but he also had access to the right software packages). I don't no if it would be possible to put vdeos up on the forum maybe matt will be able to tell me/us so we can see true 3d.

Jonny.
