Tree ID help please!
I have no clue...
I dont know what the nut or fruit looks like. when it was but a twig, the wood was dark grey (you can see a younger branch in the second shot) with small white raised specks. These are some trees I let grow in my brothers yard for the past 2 years. the trunks are now about 1.5-2 inches across. ask any other questions you need to help me out. In a book I have the closest i could come was an American Hornbeam. Last edited by groan : 8-Aug-2002 at 09:46 PM. |

The first tree looks alot like American elm. The bark looks right but the leaves look kind of small. The leaves are usually 5-6 inches long on a tree growing unrestricted.

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME

Groan.... Not sure but the elm family is a good possibility. I was looking through 'Peterson Field Guide Eastern Trees', the family has the correct leaf shape and leaf veining as well as toothed leaves. My problem is the leaves that look most like yours, smaller size etc are on the winged elm and ceder elm, both of which have a natural range in the southern part of the US. The American Elm has much larger leaf but is native to your area.
The eastern hornbeam has a slightly different shaped leaf although it is similar. This is just my observations from the book!

I should mention that when I chopped the top off this tree, it did have quite large leaves at the top branches. possibly as large as 4-5 inches long.
I am having my brother bring me a few leaves. I will scan them and post them. Thanks very much! |
