tree determination

Hi Bonsaifriends,

Just bought this tree last saturday, because I liked its corky looking bark and its folliage which could easily draw the viewer to an African style (pierneef style) bonsai.
Just costs 12 $ at the biggest bonsainursery of the Netherlands. Since the bark is looking corky, I don't really know if its a Ulmus or Zelkova Nire?

Who can help me determine?
If anyone has any other ideas for styling, dont hessitate......?
(btw the tree is 24 cm high and has a trunkbase of 4 cm.)

Thanks in advance, Wessel

Humbly submitted

Wessel:

I agree with you that the shape of the trunk inspires a plains/veldt style tree. I like the trunk from the third view, with the intersting negative space created by the bend in the trunk below the canopy.

A vision like that popped into my head immediately, so I did a quick and dirty virtual, which I now humbly submit for the forum's members to praise, trash, or discuss as they see fit.

The leaves in closer view. Hope this'll make it easier to decide.

Thanks, Wessel

yes i prefer the lighter coloured pot, remeniscant of the dry grass seen on african plains. Also, I think it is an elm

Even with my limited experience, I'm thinking an elm of some flavour also. I have a Ulmus Parvifolia "Sejiu" that has those very small leaves like this. Looks like it already is getting some nice ramification in the canopy. The corkyness (word?) looks like my cork bark elm, but the leaves are smaller...

I will Pootsie, it's a better look, and keeping the frame work, the mound was to high too IMHO. What do use for your virts?

Looks like Elm to me
