is it too long??
This is a cascade I styled last year from nursery stock and will be put into a pot this spring. Do you all think that it may be to long??

I have tackled the first tree and all i feel you have to do is to bring the cascade 'limb' around to the left and up a bit and re adjust the foliage pads back to horizontal again. I dont think its too long as such just wrongly positioned. This makes a balanced tree but you may wish to reposition some of the branches as i think a few would qualify as bar branches - branches that sprout from the same point on the trunck in opposite directions - either re position or cut them off as jinning them is just as bad as leaving them as they are. I do something with the other one soon. Rgds James |

Ive looked at the second one and decided that in my view the same thing needs to happen to it as the first. By just tightening the S bend in the cascade limb and defining the foliage it would look far better, maybe sort out and bar branches as per the first and maybe jin the od branch on the cascade to make it look as though it belongs to the top of the tree. I have posted below some examples of cascade bonsai that will help to understand the balance and form of the cascade branch. Rgds James PS the first is a shimpaku juniper, the second an Abies, and the third Juniper squamata - none of these are mine unfortunatly ![]() |

Re: is it too long??
Greetings James,
Thanks for the pics and suggestions. I was on a styling frenzy last year and just did a pre styling I guess you wood call it. I agree that I could bend the cascade up and back to center it with the apex and get rid of some of the fish backbone branches. The first pic of the cascade with all the jin looks really good. here is another cascade that was a little weak and I let it go last year and I will work on it to this year. Man I'm going to be one busy person but that is how I like it. The more I do the more I want, you know how it is. Had to really crop this pic to get kbs down. sorry Thanks so much John

Re: is it too long??
I would leave it in the growing container one more year if it were my tree. I would try to restyle the top. I would take a little off the tail, but IMHO the apex is too tall. I would take it down to the bushy level and try to regrow the apex in a shorter style. I feel that the top is competeing for the foilage at the bottom. If you notice the foilsge is larger at the tips of the tail. The foilage pads need to decend in size from larger at the trunk to smaller at the tip. Your are just the opposite. Some people make a special cradle to hold their cascade when they are not displaying them so that the tree will seem to grow more horizontal. Its just fooling the tree. Hope you like what I have done. Best regards, Bonsaial

Jhill, You are having fun am I right? Another way to shorten this puppy if you feel it's too long is some radical bending. I'm sure you know this but the raffia and wire technique could work for you here. I like the Shortened apex as well, Very nice Al.

Re: is it too long??
Greetings all,
Have to agree with you Al the shorter apex looks alot more balanced. I was going to let the top grow out more and maybe in the future I might do away with the cascade all together. I will definitely do some more bending this year. Just had a blast last year styling from nursery stock. I'll post some of the others but I don't want to post to many at once makes me feel like a hog ![]() Luv to Bonsai Jhill
