Tom Thumb

Hello Everyone. This is my 1 year old Tom Thumb Bougainvillia. It is very thin in the trunk and the growth is fairly sparse at the moment. I would love some feedback on the potential of this tree and whether or not I should persist with the brrom style for this tree. All Comments welcome.

It is a pretty house plant but the trunk diameter is far from giving the illusion of mature tree. Possible solutions would be to let the trunk grow in the ground or in a big pot or to chop it down to a height where it would be more proportionate and wait for new growth to apear (for a reference check out the little guy in my last thread). Good luck with your bougie!

I hear you. But from the lady at my local nursery i was told that this species does not grow very big at all. So maybe the suggestion of lwering the trunk height is a good one. I have another bougainvillia that is defoliated at the moment with I will submit so you guys can have a look.

Agree. Believe me they can get to be pretty big...Thorns can be reduced and tamed with bonsai training.

I know they do grow big. We used to have a 2.5 metre high natal bougainvillea hedge in our garden. And in durban and the areas around there are some huges ones. I have looked on the internet and found that this particular species is a more compact growing shrub, which now begs the question is this really a suitable specimen for Bonsai. I can't find any pictures of the " Tom Thumb Bougainvillea " having grown big. In South Africa the variety of bougainvillea is huge. On the Malanseuns web site ( http://www.malanseuns.co.za/List.asp?MainCat=Trees%20and%20Shrubs%20/%20Bome%20en%20Struike&Cat=Bougainvillea ) there are a few species to have a look at. Some of it is afrikaans so you may not understand. But there are a number of pics. And the Tom Tumb is said to be approx. 50cm X 50cm. Have a look and let me know what you think. PS. Thanks for your comments and have you had a look at my other post?
