After the Walter Pall workshop:

Continuing work today, I did some more carving and then started on Walter's torch technique. I used a micro butane torch to burn the deadwood. The wood needs to be really burned, not just blackened. Use a wet towel to protect foliage and lifelines.

After brushing with a steel wire brush, then brass brush, the wood looks aged, with raised grain lines and some fine cracking. I continued with the whole tree. The burned areas remain brown after brushing, so I'll bleach with lime-sulfur later.

I was able to repot without removing hardly any roots, in a mica rectangular pot. I change the potting angle to sit it up straighter. Walter sees this eventually in a custom, crescent pot - not in my budget at this time. You can see at the lower left of the tree, a large, severed root that just kind of sticks out there. If I eventually use a crescent pot, that won't matter. If not, I'll have to figure out what to do about that.

And here it is in its new home. I'm pretty pleased with it. Like I said, eventually I'll bleach the deadwood back to white with lime sulfur. I will probably reduce the foliage even further once I'm sure it's happy.

Good work -- So, what did you learn from our sensei - online and now offline - Herr Pall??

From Walter I learned the torching technique to generate more natural looking deadwood. More generally, I think the big lessons were looking for movement in the tree. Consider the traditional Japanese forms, but don't be afraid to ignore them if the tree tells you to.
